Central Maine Power Reports Fewer than 7,200 Customers Still Without Power from Thursday’s Wind Storm
AUGUSTA, Maine, February 1, 2013, 11:30 a.m. — Central Maine Power Company (CMP), a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, reports fewer than 7,200 customer outages remain as a result of the wind storm that swept through Maine on Thursday. Strong winds associated with a frontal system brought gusts over 60 miles per hour, knocking out power to more than 111,000 homes and businesses in CMP’s service area. The number of outages peaked at more than 44,000 at midday Thursday. CMP has restored service to nearly 104,000 customers since yesterday morning. Strong winds continued to cause additional scattered outages overnight, but the company expects to restore service to all storm-related outages by later today.
“Contract crews are helping our own crews in areas where we have the most remaining outages, and we’ll continue to move more crews into those areas until we have everyone back,” said John Carroll, spokesperson for CMP. “We were also able to complete inspections of some transmission lines by helicopter before the wind began to pick up, and we are hoping for the wind to ease so we can resume those aerial inspections.”
