Central Maine Power Reports 21,000 Homes and Businesses without Power

AUGUSTA, Maine, December 21, 2012, 10 p.m. — Central Maine Power Company (CMP), a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, reports 20,713homes and businesses remain without power this evening, and some customers will remain out through the night. A powerful wind storm with gusts over 50 mph swept through Maine today, causing as many as 61,000 customers to lose power at some point between noon and 10 p.m. Customers began to report outages in southern York County at about 2:30 in the afternoon. The number of reported outages surged to a peak of more than 37,000 just after 5 p.m.

CMP crews have restored service to nearly 35,000 customers by 10 p.m., and will continue working through the night to de-energized damaged equipment for public safety and to restore service in areas where the winds have eased. The company said some customers in communities throughout its service area will not have power overnight. CMP has also enlisted help from private contractors for lineworkers and tree crews as they work to remove uprooted trees and broken limbs that snapped poles and brought wires down to the ground.
