Central Maine Power Reports 77,000 Outages from Hurricane Sandy

AUGUSTA, Maine, October 30, 2012, 10 a.m. — Central Maine Power Company (CMP), a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, reports 77,000 homes and businesses without power as the company assesses damage and begins service restoration in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The outage count is down from a peak of nearly 88,000 outages, and the company estimates that nearly 147,000 customers have lost power at one time or another since the storm moved into Maine at noon on Monday.

“The priorities for today will be safety and assessment, and we’ll begin restoration in many areas,” said John Carroll, spokesperson for Central Maine Power. “A workforce of nearly 1,000 lineworkers, tree crews, assessors, safety specialists, and support personnel deployed from local offices throughout our service area early this morning.”

Customers in the south and coastal counties of York and Cumberland bore the brunt of the storm damage in Maine. Customers continue to report some new outages in some towns although the strongest winds have eased in most parts of the company’s service area.
