CMP Renews Alert to Customers on Bill Collection Scam in Southern Maine

     AUGUSTA, Maine, August 9, 2012 — Central Maine Power Company (CMP) is renewing its warnings about a fraudulent scheme to collect payments for utility service from small businesses in southern Maine. At least two businesses have contacted CMP within the last week after making payments into bogus accounts in response to the scheme. CMP has reported these events to the police and the Maine Attorney General’s office.

Customers report receiving bill collection calls, and in some cases, personal visits, from someone identifying himself as “Carlos”, who claims to represent CMP. The calls appear to originate from New Jersey with a 201 area code. Sometimes Carolos will instruct the customer to return the call and ask for extension 2025. Customers are told to deposit cash or a money order into bogus accounts through convenience store cash transfer systems to avoid immediate disconnection of service. CMP urges customers to confirm the authenticity of any call for payment on their utility accounts, and report suspicious calls to the local police.

CMP offers these tips to keep account information secure and protect their payments:

  •  CMP will not call a customer for payment if his or her account is in good standing;
  • Customers who need to make an urgent payment should do so only through the CMP website, or at one of the payment agents listed on the website at www.cmpco.com.

  • Customers who have any questions about a call for an overdue payment are urged to contact CMP by calling 1 (800) 750-4000.
