Newly Expanded CMP Substation in Berwick Will Enhance Reliability in Southern York County
AUGUSTA, Maine, May 29, 2012 — Central Maine Power Company (CMP), a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, recently energized the newly expanded Bassett Substation in Berwick, Maine. The facility will help to enhance reliability for homes and businesses in the Berwick area.
Construction at the Bassett Substation on Old Route 4 began last fall. At the same time, crews began work on two related projects: a 2.3-mile transmission line to feed Bassett from the Quaker Hill Substation in North Berwick, and reconfiguration of a distribution circuit to run directly from the upgraded substation. Those improvements have a combined value of more than $7 million. The work is part of the larger Berwick Area Reinforcement Project, which will eventually involve construction new substations in Berwick and Lebanon, along with further expansion of the transmission and distribution network serving the area.
“With the Bassett Substation and its upgraded circuit now in service, homes and businesses in Berwick and surrounding communities now have a more stable and reliable source of power,” said Sara Burns, CMP’s president and chief executive officer. “Once it is finished, the larger Berwick Area Reinforcement project will provide a more robust transmission and distribution network, and the expandable network is better suited to serve growth in a large part of southern York County.
“With the support of our parent company Iberdrola USA, CMP invested more than $500 million last year building a stronger, smarter grid for Maine,” added Burns. “We will spend almost as much again in 2012. CMP’s investments in Berwick and elsewhere are creating thousands of construction jobs, while ensuring long-term grid reliability and capacity for growth.”
