New Substation and Transmission Lines Will Enhance Electric Service in Saco, Maine

Central Maine Power set to energize grid upgrades for Saco Bay region

AUGUSTA, Maine, March 27, 2012 — Central Maine Power Company (CMP) is set to energize a new transmission line and substation in Saco, Maine to increase capacity and to improve reliability for the electric grid in the Saco Bay region. The Goosefare Substation on Industrial Park Road will be put into service on Wednesday, March 28, 2012. It is the first of two new substations the company is building for the communities of Biddeford, Old Orchard Beach, Saco, and Scarborough. The $30 million Saco Bay Transmission Reinforcement Project includes two, seven-mile transmission lines operating at 115,000 volts and 34,500 volts, two new substations in Saco and Old Orchard Beach, and improvements at other substations in the area.

“The Goosefare Substation will improve power quality and reliability for Saco residents and businesses,” said Sara Burns, CMP’s president and chief executive officer. “The new transmission lines will give us a more robust transmission network in the region, and the substation has extra capacity to serve growth in the industrial park and downtown business district.”

Central Maine Power Company began construction on the Saco Bay project last fall after a five-year review by state and local authorities. With the Goosefare Substation energized, the next phases of the project will include a second substation near the Smithwheel Road in Old Orchard Beach, improvements to an existing substation on School Street in that town, and the extension of the transmission lines to Old Orchard Beach. CMP expects to complete the project in the fall 2012.

“With the support of our parent company Iberdrola USA, CMP invested more than $500 million last year building a stronger, smarter grid for Maine,” said Burns. “We will spend almost as much again in 2012. CMP’s investments in Saco and elsewhere are creating thousands of construction jobs, while ensuring long-term grid reliability and capacity for growth.”
