Maine utility crews join storm recovery in New York

AUGUSTA, Maine, March 17, 2010 — Central Maine Power Company (CMP) crews are among the 3,000 lineworkers and support personal helping to restore service to 263,000 customers on Long Island, New York following a windstorm on Saturday, March 13. The company sent 28 two-man crews plus support personnel to join Long Island Power Authority’s (LIPA) efforts in response to their request for assistance.

“Our company was facing a similar situation just a few weeks ago, and crews came to Maine from as far away as Florida, Michigan, and the Canadian Maritimes,” said Sara Burns, president of Central Maine Power. “This storm didn’t bring the same high winds for us, so we were pleased to be able to return the favor.”

Long Island experienced severe weather with near hurricane force winds on March 13. CMP sent 28 two-man line crews, eight supervisors, four safety specialists, six mechanics, and two coordinators to New York earlier this week to assist the Long Island Power Authority’s recovery efforts. As of Wednesday, 245,000 customers have already been restored. LIPA says all individual customer outages should be restored by Thursday night.

The Long Island Power Authority provides electric service to more than 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. The company is the second largest municipal electric utility in the nation in terms of electric revenues, and third largest in terms of customers served.
