High winds cause widespread power outages in Maine
AUGUSTA, Maine, Nov. 28, 2009, 5:30 p.m. — Central Maine Power Company (CMP) reports that high winds have knocked out power to nearly 12,800 homes and businesses as of 5:30 p.m. The company said that outages peaked at about 18,300 customer accounts at 2:45 in the afternoon when winds gusted up to 40 miles per hour along the coast and at higher elevations. CMP has called in crews throughout its service area and additional contractors are working to clear fallen trees and limbs and repair downed lines. The company expects to restore power to most customers by late tonight, although some customers in mid-coast counties and in northern portions of Somerset and Franklin counties are likely to be without power until tomorrow.
