CMP’s new Heywood Road Switchyard enhances service in the Benton-Winslow-Skowhegan corridor
AUGUSTA, Maine, May 28, 2009 — Central Maine Power Co.’s (CMP) new Heywood Road Switchyard in Benton is up and running, providing reliable electric delivery service to business and residential customers in the Benton, Winslow, and Skowhegan areas. CMP energized the facility this month.
The Heywood Road project is part of a broader effort to enhance service and reliability to CMP’s more than 600,000 customers.
“CMP is continually investing in its electric-delivery infrastructure to improve our service to customers,” says company spokesman John Carroll. “This new switchyard adds capacity and enhances reliability for people in the area.”
CMP built the facility at the junction of two transmission lines on a 6.5-acre site off the north side of Heywood Road near the Winslow-Benton town line. Crews built a control house and erected the steel switchyard equipment, six breakers, and a capacitor bank. The facility serves as part of a vital connection for transmission lines that carry power between Benton, Winslow, and Skowhegan.
“This new switchyard adds flexibility to our system,” says Carroll. “If there is a problem on the line somewhere, or if we need to perform maintenance to the system, we’ll be better able to switch load through other lines and keep the lights on for our customers.”
CMP also upgraded a nearby transmission line as part of the switchyard project.
Completion of the new Heywood Road Switchyard comes just two years after a major overhaul of CMP’s Winslow Substation, where workers upgraded existing equipment and installed new capacitor banks, breakers, relays, insulators, and digital communications equipment.
