CMP cuts customer outages to fewer than 22,000

AUGUSTA, Maine, Feb. 24, 2009, 10 p.m. — Central Maine Power Co. (CMP) has surpassed its goal to cut customer outages from this week’s winter storm to fewer than 30,000 by the end of Tuesday. At 9:30 this evening, CMP had restored power to more than 80 percent of the 130,000 customers who were without service at the peak of the storm Monday morning. An estimated 21,975 customers remain without power.

More than 130 mutual-aid crews from other New England states and New Brunswick and 100 tree crews joined CMP line crews in the field today, the first full day of restoration following the storm’s exit from the area yesterday.

During a tour of storm damage in Bath with Gov. John Baldacci this morning, CMP President Sara Burns announced today’s goal to reduce outages to fewer than 30,000. She added a second objective: to complete outage restoration for all customers by late Thursday evening.

CMP has completed its storm recovery in several of its northern service areas, including Dover, Fairfield, Farmington, and Skowhegan. Crews will continue working in affected areas through the night, but customers who are still without power this evening should prepare for another night without power.

Following is a list of outages by Service Center. Each Service Center includes the city or town listed, along with a dozen or more surrounding communities:

Alfred: 1,580
Augusta: 1,075
Bridgton: 1,515
