CMP cuts outages by 75 percent since Wednesday evening peak

AUGUSTA, Maine, Feb. 14, 2008, 10:00 p.m. — Central Maine Power Co. crews have restored power to more than two-thirds of the customers who lost power on Wednesday evening. As of 10:00 p.m. Thursday, an estimated 17,200 customers were without service. That’s down from a peak of more than 79,000 just 24 hours earlier on Wednesday evening.

“We’ve had more than 300 lineworkers from CMP and other utilities and contractors in the field all day, and the work will continue overnight,” says CMP spokesman John Carroll. “With the work completed in other areas, we’re funneling crews into the hardest hit communities. There’s still a lot of work ahead, but we should make good progress tomorrow.”

Following is a breakdown of outages by Service Center. Each Service Center includes the city or town listed and about a dozen surrounding communities. A map showing the service areas is available on the company's outage page on its website at www.cmpco.com.

Alfred – 1,870
Augusta – 7,250
Bridgton – 259
Lewiston – 7,700
Portland – 140

Total: 17,200

CMP expects to restore service to many customers overnight and through the day tomorrow, however, it is probable that customers in some Androscoggin and Kennebec County communities will not have their power back before Saturday.

CMP is in contact with county emergency management agencies coordinating shelter operations in the hardest-hit areas. For Thursday night, an overnight shelter is open at the Augusta Civic Center’s North Wing. Additional information on shelters and their hours of operation is on the Maine Emergency Management Agency’s web site at http://www.maine.gov/mema/.
