CMP crews on their way to Nova Scotia
AUGUSTA, Maine, Nov. 5, 2007 — Central Maine Power Company line crews, equipment, and additional personnel are on their way to Nova Scotia this week, helping to repair damage from the remnants of Hurricane Noel that passed through the region over the weekend. A dozen crews and additional support personnel from CMP left for Canada this morning following a request for help from Nova Scotia Power.
After hitting parts of the Maine coast Saturday, the storm pounded Nova Scotia, packing strong winds and heavy rain. The conditions brought down tree limbs and wires, leaving an estimated 170,000 Nova Scotia Power customers without service.
“We are happy to be able to help our neighbors in the Maritimes,” said CMP spokesperson John Carroll. “While we had some damage in coastal parts of our service area, CMP was spared the worst of this storm. We will still have plenty of crews and other resources on hand in Maine to finish our storm repairs and continue to provide safe and reliable service to our customers.”
CMP had power back to most of its storm-damaged areas on Sunday. The utility expects to complete storm repairs to the last of its affected customers on Islesboro in Penobscot Bay later today.
It’s typical for utilities to assist one another under mutual aid agreements during storm restorations. On Sunday, CMP sent 10 crews to Bangor Hydro-Electric Company territory to help repair damage in Hancock and Washington Counties. After the Patriots’ Day storm last April, utility crews from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia spent nearly a week in Maine helping CMP and Bangor Hydro restore power.
