Final push on storm repair continues
AUGUSTA, Maine, April 20, 2007, 4 p.m. Central Maine Power Company workers and reinforcements from other utilities, contractors, and tree companies, have nearly completed their work restoring power to customers who lost service when a severe coastal storm blew though the area early this week. The utility has restored power to about 98 percent of the affected customers.
At 4 p.m. Friday, an estimated 2,800 customer accounts remained without service down from a peak of 127,585 at the height of the storm Monday. Most of these customers are in coastal communities from Harpswell to Bristol, where the damage was most severe and where thousands of downed trees have blocked utility access to storm-damaged areas.
"Are crews are now working in the most remote parts our service area, and each repair is bringing back just a handful customers, or even one customer at a time," says CMP spokesperson Gail Rice. "We will keep at it until the last of these customers has power back."
CMP expects to have service restored to customers to the final customers in Greater Portland by this evening. The utility adds that it hopes to restore power to most of the remaining customers in the Midcoast area by late this evening, however the most isolated parts of these peninsula and island communities will endure one more night without service.
"This has been a difficult restoration effort in some places, the damage has been worse than what was experienced during the 1998 ice storms," said Rice. "We appreciate people's patience and the many kind words of support our crews and phone representatives have received over the past few days."
Following is a list of towns and roads that CMP predicts are most likely to be without service into Saturday:
Boothbay
Georgetown
Harpswell
Nobleboro
Phippsburg
Southport
