Release: Immediate - An Energy East Company
Outage count drops overnight
AUGUSTA, Maine, April 6, 2007, 9:00 a.m. Central Maine Power Co. line crews worked through the night, restoring power to an additional 20,000 customer accounts by this morning. As of 8:00 a.m., the company reports that 59,200 customer accounts were still without power, down from the more than 80,000 outages reported at 9:00 p.m. yesterday. The company estimates that the outages peaked at more than 117,000 customer accounts just after noon yesterday.
Fresh crews from CMP's northern offices returned to work at daybreak, backed up by 10 crews from N-Star, a Massachusetts utility, and 3 crews from Maine Public Service in Aroostook County. More than 300 lineworkers and arborists will be in the field this morning with additional support personnel handling supplies, logistics, customer calls, and work orders.
"It's an effort that involves nearly everyone in the company," said CMP spokesman John Carroll. "For example, one team of employees has made more than 600 calls to customers who are dependent on medical equipment for life support. We check on their condition, and keep them up to date as the restoration progresses."
By the end of the day, CMP expects to have service restored to all customers in the areas around Portland, Lewiston, Bridgton, and Rockland, and they expect to make good progress in York County and the mid-coast region. However, some customers in parts of York County and mid-coast communities between Brunswick and Damariscotta are not likely to have their power restored until some time on Saturday.
Following is a breakdown of outages by Service Center. Each Service Center includes the city or town listed and about a dozen surrounding communities. A map showing the service areas is available on the company's outage page on its website at www.cmpco.com.
Alfred - 26,770
Bridgton - 215
Brunswick - 23,500
Portland - 8,500
Rockland - 250
