CMP reports nearly 95,000 outages

AUGUSTA, Maine, April 5, 2007, noon Central Maine Power Co. line crews and support personnel have been assessing storm damage and repairing downed wires since before dawn. The reports of outages began rising rapidly between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m. By noon, the company estimates that more than 94,600 customer accounts were without power.

"Tree limbs are snapping or sagging down onto the lines under the weight of the snow," says CMP spokesman John Carroll. "We're still assessing the damage, but southern and coastal areas have been hit the worst. We're likely to have several days work ahead of us in some areas."

More than 240 lineworkers and additional support personnel are working in the field, backed up by additional personnel in CMP's Service Centers. The company has also contacted utilities in surrounding areas for assistance.

Following is a breakdown of outages by Service Center. Each Service Center includes the city or town listed and about a dozen surrounding communities. A map showing the service areas is available on the company's outage page on its website at www.cmpco.com.

Alfred - 36,000
Augusta - 2,700
Bridgton - 4,000
Brunswick - 30,000
Dover - 90
Fairfield - 2,400
Farmington - 90
Lewiston - 1,690
Portland - 15,000

CMP urges customers to stay away from downed power lines.

"All lines should be considered live and dangerous, and touching them could be deadly," said Carroll. "Customers should leave all cleanup efforts to our crews, who are trained and equipped to handle the equipment safely. And please, if you come upon a CMP crew at work in the roadway, remember to drive carefully; working conditions can be difficult, and the crews will appreciate your consideration for their safety."
