CMP gift brings another award-winning book to Maine children

AUGUSTA, Maine, April 2, 2007 Central Maine Power Co. has put an award-winning children's book in hundreds of public libraries and Maine schools for the seventh year in a row. The company has donated copies of Caldecott Medal winner The Hello, Goodbye Window by Norton Juster and Chris Raschka to more than 600 public, private, and parochial schools and public libraries in its service territory.

"We're happy to donate this wonderful book to the libraries and schools we serve," said CMP President Sara J. Burns. "We hope The Hello, Goodbye Window and its entertaining story will spark a love for reading that lasts a lifetime."

CMP's donation comes as part of the utility's charitable giving to community initiatives that help Maine families and communities engage children in the lifelong rewards of reading, learning, and educational success.

In The Hello, Goodbye Window, a little girl tells about her everyday experiences visiting her grandparents' house. Raschka's illustrations resemble the spontaneous drawings of little children, and Juster's narrative reflects the special connection that exists between children and their grandparents.

Upon awarding the Caldecott Medal, the Association for Library Service to Children wrote, "With a few energetic lines, Raschka suggests a world filled with affection and humor. The richly textured tones of these expressive illustrations convey the emotional warmth of the intergenerational connection."
