CMP responding to scattered outages from winter storm
AUGUSTA, Maine, March 2, 2007 Central Maine Power Co. has experienced scattered power outages from the snow, sleet, and gusty winds that came with Friday's winter storm. At approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday, the utility reported 3,000 customer accounts were without service, mostly in its Portland and Brunswick service areas.
"Our crews have been able to keep up with the outage reports we've had so far," said CMP spokesman John Carroll. "We continue to watch the weather, and forecasters tell us that the wind and precipitation should end this evening. In the meantime, we will keep extra crews on hand and are ready to respond to reports of new outages."
The largest outages affecting CMP so far happened around midday. Several thousand customer accounts in Gray and surrounding communities lost service when power lines came down on a plow truck. Another 1,500 customer accounts in Dresden and Pittston lost service for about two hours today. Outages were also reported in Westbrook and parts of York County and the Midcoast area.
CMP reminds drivers to use caution when approaching utility crews in the roadway.
"This storm has made driving conditions treacherous, and we urge anyone who comes across our repair crews to exercise extreme caution, proceed slowly, and keep a safe distance," said Carroll.
The company continues to urge customers to use caution if they see downed lines.
"Everyone should stay clear of any downed power lines and fallen trees or limbs that may be tangled in the lines," said Carroll. "All lines should all be considered live and dangerous, and customers should leave clean-up to our crews, who are trained and equipped to handle these situations safely."
